What happens during a session?

Test In the introductory appointment a full intake will be given, as we need to take the time to discover what your goals are and also whereabouts you are in regards to current health. A postural assessment is made at the beginning of each session which helps set the goals of the treatment, and also to let you feel at the end of the session how things have changed.

The session takes place on a massage table. Rolfers are trained to develop a sensitivity of touch combined with firm pressure to apply movement to the tissues. The sensation could be described as a slow comfortable melting feeling within the skin and tissues which does not feel unpleasant. We may also use active or passive movement to help stimulate the sense organs of the muscles, tendons and joints.

Rolfing is an active process and works best with your full awareness. At the end of the treatment you will often be given homework of movement exercises which will help you to deepen the changes you experience during the session.

What should I wear?

The techniques work best if carried out directly through the skin. As such people may wear their underwear or sports/swimwear, and can also be covered during the treatment. For those who prefer to be less exposed, more modest options are also available.

Rolfing YorkshireTo really solidify the changes from each session it is useful to maintain an awareness of yourself in posture and movement between sessions. Exercises may be given which consist of slow mindful movements for you to practice and gain a deeper understanding of how your body works. You don't have to be strong or flexible to be comfortable, but it is helpful to develop a more intelligent sense of body use.

How does Rolfing work?

The fascia is a tissue which holds, separates and supports the various segments of the body, as well as individual tissue types (such as muscle, organ and nerve). Dr. Rolf created a large body of techniques and methodologies for manipulating the fascia and bringing the body into a better sense of order. This is known to Rolfers as 'the recipe', and consists of a series of sessions which progressively work throughout the whole body.
