What is Somatics?
Somatic Movement Education is a system of neuromuscular re-education which seeks to allow more ease and freedom in every day movement. A series of functional and mindful movements are performed slowly, gently and with awareness, with the goal of improving the efficiency of the brain and body. In this way the neuromuscular system is retrained to learn a more efficient and comfortable way of being.
Benefits of Somatic Movement
- Release deep held tensions and stress.
- Learn to move easily and enjoyably with the whole body.
- Develop your self awareness and improve your proprioception.
- Learn a series of movements which you can use to deepen the benefits at home
Somatics uses the following principles of movement to achieve these goals:
Moving slowly: By taking time with movement it is possible to feel deeply how you co-ordinate your muscle actions to perform a movement of the limbs. People are often surprised to discover that basic movements such as breathing contain many subtle variations which may be improved by simple retraining.
Moving easily: This means to learn how much (or how little) force is needed when the goal is to move well. By releasing tension you free energy bound up in contracted muscle fibres and also can learn to find much more enjoyment from the sense of movement.
Moving with awareness: By slowing things down and reducing the effort you open yourself up to more sensory information. Developing awareness (which becomes easier over time) gives you direct feedback as to how you're moving, which in turn leads to greater efficiency.
With practise it is possible to apply these principles to any kind of movement, from washing the dishes to yoga to extreme sports. It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Somatics is available in the following formats: Clinical somatics (one-to-one) and group classes.
Clinical Somatics
In the clinical somatic education hands-on sessions we focus on the individual needs of the client. An overall assessment is made and from that a session is designed for your particular requirements. During the session you will learn how to build a daily practice of somatic movements. This will enable you to enjoy a rapid and significant improvement in physical comfort, quality of movement, posture and overall appearance.
Group Classes
In this format you will be led through a specific series of somatic movements over a course of six weeks. The classes consist of a a series of lessons designed to work from the core to the outer layers of the body. Throughout this you will have the opportunity to develop a personal practice to allow you to continue to deepen your somatic experience from home.
Group classes may or may not be suitable depending on your current physical well-being. If you have difficulty finding comfort it may be best to attend one to one sessions first. Please contact us if in doubt.
