Sports Massage Therapy
Sports therapy (or sports massage) is a type of deep tissue massage which uses a variety of soft tissue manipulation techniques to aid the healing of injured tissue and improve mobility. These techniques include:
- Trigger point therapy
- Soft tissue release
- Muscle energy techniques (MET's)
- Advanced Myofascial Release
Sports massage therapy, despite the name, is not only for sports or active people, they can work with anybody regardless of fitness level. The techniques can be applied gently for a more relaxing treatment or with strength for a more 'constructive' treatment. It is a misconception that the treatment should be painful for it to be effective, and although sports therapy is usually a fairly rigorous treatment care is taken that pain boundaries are respected.
My 'Style' of Sports Therapy
I originally trained as a sports therapist in 2004, and for the first several years in practice specialised in giving strong deep tissue massage and tough trigger point therapy sessions. Since then I have been informed by my experience and training in Thai massage, Rolfing and Somatics that for most people the 'no pain no gain' mindset is limiting when it comes to longer lasting improvements. I can still be firm with my treatments where necessary but no longer provide overly intense massage, as I believe it is usually ineffective and possibly dangerous.
I like to integrate the techniques from all the techniques I have learnt to make the massage as effective as possible. If you have specific requirements (for example, are only interested in a deep tissue massage) then please let me know.
